BEFORE YOUR FIRST VISIT
7 questions to ask before an aesthetic consultation.
You do not need to arrive with a treatment chosen. A useful consultation starts with your goals and gives you space to understand the options before deciding.
A general preparation guide, not a personal treatment recommendation. Your clinician should assess your individual circumstances.
1. Who will assess and treat me?
Ask for the provider’s full name, professional title and relevant experience. In Ontario, you can check a nurse’s registration through the College of Nurses of Ontario and a physician’s registration through the CPSO Physician Register. Ask who is responsible for assessment, treatment and follow-up; these may involve different people.
2. What can we realistically address?
Describe the feature or concern you want to discuss, rather than requesting a fixed amount of product. Ask what change is realistic, what the proposed approach cannot achieve and whether doing nothing is a reasonable option. Bring your own questions in writing so they are easy to revisit.
3. Which product is proposed?
Ask for the exact product name and to see its label. Health Canada advises patients receiving injectable treatments to check that the product is authorized for sale in Canada. A familiar brand name on social media is not a substitute for verifying the actual product. Read Health Canada’s product-safety advice.
4. What are the risks and alternatives?
Cosmetic injections can cause adverse reactions. Ask the clinician to explain common side effects, serious complications, alternatives and the reasons a treatment may be unsuitable for you. Get instructions about warning signs and whom to contact. Health Canada’s cosmetic-injection information is a starting point for this conversation.
5. What information should I bring?
Ask the clinic what it needs in advance. Be ready to discuss your health history, allergies, medications and previous cosmetic procedures privately with the clinician. Health Canada highlights the importance of discussing possible interactions. Do not change prescribed medication based on this guide.
6. What does the quoted price include?
Ask for the total proposed cost, how it is calculated, whether any consultation or follow-up fee applies, and what happens if the plan changes. Confirm the current price directly rather than relying on an older advertisement. Clarify any deposit or cancellation conditions before booking.
7. What happens after the appointment?
Ask about the recommended aftercare, any time you may need away from your usual activities, and how follow-up works. Confirm the appointment address and contact number before travelling. Make sure you know how to get help if a concern arises outside normal contact hours.
